Please tell us a little bit about yourself. What is your name? Where are you based? What does a typical day look like to you?

Hi I’m Kat from Drawn to Cats. I create cat themed illustration from my home studio in Saltburn-by-the-sea. A typical day involves creating new designs on my iPad and taking care of admin tasks like uploading designs and updating my database of designs. I also run a facebook group called the Procreate Creative Community, for the digital resource marketplace Design Cuts. I spend time each day moderating and giving people support and feedback.

How would you describe your style of work?

Colourful, quirky, and fun!

What is the best piece of advice you have ever been given in life?

‘Brains come first!’, in other words it’s important to look after yourself, and try to find a balance where you don’t burn out.

What inspires you?

The world around me, tv shows, conversations with friends, podcasts, books, nature. Sometimes you just need to pay attention.

Is there a piece of artwork on Art Wow that you are most proud of? Why?

My cat crowd pattern. It was the first time I had created a more complicated repeat pattern, and I think the result is a lot of fun!

If your artwork were music, what would it sound like?

Love Cats by the Cure!

What artist, past or present has inspired you?

So many! I grew up watching Jim Hanson’s wonderful creations, and that made me want to create. I love the work of Henri Rousseau, Rene Magritte, David McKee, Alex T Smith – it’s a varied list!

Who are your biggest influences?

Probably my Mum, and my partner. They are great for bouncing ideas off, and for testing them too.

What was the last gift you gave someone?

I gave my Dad some amazing brownie treats from Jojo Coco. They even do brownie truffles – try them, you won’t regret it!

How did you get started as an illustrator?

I did graphic design at university, but then went into education. My Mum is a children’s book writer, and she took me to some SCBWI events filled with children’s book writers and illustrators, and before I knew it, I had the illustration bug!

If you were an animal, what would you be and why?

I feel like I should say a cat, but my partner would say I’m a Koala. I love the smell of eucalyptus… and I like a hug!

How did you develop your distinct style? Was it an experimental process?

I was challenged to draw a series of cats, and just didn’t stop! Although the work I put out under Drawn to Cats has a very recognisable style I have worked in many different ones, and still like to experiment on side projects. A lot of the Drawn to Cats style came from limiting myself to certain colours and brushes etc.

What have been your biggest creative challenges to date?

I was made redundant from my job as a Teaching Assistant at the beginning of 2020 and have been working at building a business with my illustration since then. There has been a lot to learn!

In one word, describe how art makes you feel.

Happy!
