Mother’s Day grants each of us the opportunity to honour and celebrate the maternal figure in our lives and the sacrifices they have made for us. But when did it start?
The occasion as we know it originated in the early 20th century in America. A woman Anna Jarvis held a memorial in honour of her own Mother who had passed, holding a service of worship in West Virginia. This marks the first observed Mother’s Day as it quickly spread across the U.S., with President Woodrow Wilson declaring the second Sunday in May to be the official date of Mother’s Day.
In the 16th century in the UK people would return for a service at the ‘mother church’ – the main church in the area- on the 4th day of Lent. Originally referred to as attending ‘a -mothering’ though later becoming known as Mothering Sunday. During World War II, American and Canadian soldiers stationed in Britain began to popularise their own Mother’s Day traditions, merging them with the traditional ones (hence the differing dates across the pond). This was then seen as a commercial opportunity by merchants and retailers who promoted the celebration heavily, by the 1950s we can see modern Mother’s Day practices celebrated all over the British Isles.
However, one thing everyone struggles with is what to get our mums! Hopefully here at ART WOW we can help you with gift ideas for Mother’s Day.
Mother’s day gift ideas
We have many designs available as greetings cards from beautiful floral designs by The 13 Prints, such as ‘Mother’s Day Wishes & Lots of Kisses’ to cheeky sentiment from artist Lisa Wardle with ‘Cheers to the Best Mum Gin and Tonic Design’. All our cards are sold with envelopes and in two sizes, either A5 or A6.
You can never go wrong with a mug, especially for tea and coffee drinkers! Giddy Kipper’s ‘For Mum: As Lovely As A Fluffy Cloud’ is absolutely adorable, along with ‘Love You Mum Hearts’ by The Boy and The Bear.
Is your mum a candle lover? We’ve got you covered! ‘She of Many Candles Mother’s Day’ by Card and Cake, is a humorous nod to those with a growing collection. Adam Regester states the obvious with ‘Mum, You’re A Star!’, as does Luxe and Loco’s ‘Fabulous Florals’. Our candles are available in 4 different scents and coloured glass holders. Vanilla being in a white glass holder, rose and peony in pink, wild fig and patchouli in a black holder and lime and basil in clear glass.
Many of our designs can be printed on a range of products from wall prints to tote bags, cushions and tea towels. To highlight just a few more designs from our Mother’s Day collection, ‘Mum Colourful Typography’ by Natalie Rodrigues adds a pop of colour to the kitchen as a tea towel. If your mum has green thumbs perhaps ‘Plant Mamma’ by Cheryl Boland on a tote bag would be a perfect gift. Artist The Girl Next Draw has created a cool 3D illusion piece with ‘Mum Helium Balloon Illustration’, which just happens to look great on a plate!
We can’t forget our grandmas, after all they are mothers too. ‘Love You Nanny’ by Adam Regester looks great on a keyring and The Boy and The Bears’ ‘Great Mums Get Promoted to Grandma’ says “I appreciate you” without actually having to say it.
Whatever you’re doing this Mother’s Days, we hope you and your parents enjoy the occasion and remember that ultimately this day is showing your appreciation to the ones who raised you.
