It is believed that the first Valentine’s Day was celebrated by the Romans over 1000 years ago, making the holiday almost as old as Christmas! Despite this, the first Valentine’s cards were not sent until the 18th century- it is thought that the first pre-printed card, dated 1797, is held at York Castle Museum. These early cards were created prior to pre-made cards; thus, they were hand crafted. They were adorned with romantic symbols such as flowers and often featured poetry and puzzles. The exchanging of cards as part of the holiday became much more popular in the mid-19th century as the introduction of the penny post, a system allowing letters to be sent for just 1 penny, made sending a valentine more affordable.
At ART WOW we have a range of designs to help you tell your loved ones that you’re thinking of them. All our greeting cards are printed on 300 gsm white linen recyclable card either A6 or A5 size, additionally, they are left blank on the inside for you to write your own message, really allowing your inner poet to flow.
Does your partner love pop culture? If so, they’ll enjoy Pink & Pip’s artistic homage to British TV classics in their “Mick to My Pam” design. Alternatively, Thom Kofoed references an iconic romantic film moment in their “Love Actually” design.
If puns are more your style, “Shrimply the Best” and “I Lava You So Much” by Giddy Kipper will raise a giggle. Or, for a cheekier sense of humour, Adam Regester employs beautifully bright colours together with naughty slogans in “Love You Sugar Tits” and “Nice Bum”.
