Whether it’s a family member, a friend, or a work colleague, we all know someone who is obsessed with cats. But some people’s cat fascinations go further than your everyday house-cat – yes, I’m talking about those big cat lovers, and in particular Tiger Lovers! Tigers are one of the most recognisable big cats due to their unique coat made of orange and black stripes, or white and black for those more allusive white tigers. Tigers are known for their focus and determination, but it is their stripes which set them apart from the rest of the big cat family!
However, they are one of the most endangered animals right now due to high demand for their stripes on the black market. The unfortunate reality is that there are now more tigers in captivity in the USA than there are left in the wild due to poaching, which has seen tigers shrink by 95% over the last 150 years.
There are only estimated to be around 3200 tigers left in the wild, with most of these being in India. Luckily, there are plenty of wildlife charities, including WWF, who are working together to try and protect the wild tigers left, and help to encourage number growth through conservation and education projects.
Just one way of showing your support for these animals is by buying artwork with their imagery on, as by doing so the hope is that people will become more engaged in the breading and conservation projects trying to save the various tiger species. ‘Red Tiger’ and ‘Tigers’ are two designs which are playful takes on tiger imagery, where as ‘Tropical and Tigers’, and ‘Fateh’, both by Uma Prabhakar Gokhale, are more focused on capturing the beauty of the tiger.
Tigers are the largest cat on Earth, so it’s no wonder humans are so fascinated by them! Unlike other big cats, tigers are extremely agile and designed for running, jumping and climbing, which seems to contradict their large structure. However, their large, heavily muscled limbs, retractable claws and powerful jaws do make then some of the best big cat hunters. It is these features that make then such a favourite among bit cat lovers!
‘Tiger Sighting’ and ‘Tiger Spirit’, both by Uma Prabhakar Gokhale, are unique deigns which show our human love for the tiger and our interests in learning more about them. The same is true of ‘The Fearless Hug – Girl and Tiger’ by Dominique Vari, which shows this connection is a more abstract and playful way. All three of these designs are a modern take on an ancient fascination of big cats, with each being playfully designed in a way that allows them to show off your tiger-love in any room effortlessly!
Nothing is more recognisable than tiger stripes, but they serve a better purpose than just being a fashionable print! Their distinctive markings help them to blend into their habitat, with their reddish-orange and yellow ochre coat which black stripes allowing them to sneak up on their prey. The earthy tones allow then to camouflage with the natural reeds, trees and grasses around them, with the black stripes breaking up the solid colour and allowing them to blend in with shaded areas.
‘Show Your Stripes’ by Yaz Raja is a classic tiger print design, showing off the contract between orange and black. But is your looking for something slightly different, ‘Tiger Animal Print Glam #6’ gives a more fashion-focused take on tiger print, while in ‘Animal Print’ Haris Kavalla mixed tiger print with those of other big cats to create a new dynamic print!
